The survey party under Mr Henderson, of the Public Works Department, arrived in town on Thursday evening last, having completed a running survey of the pro* jected East and West Coast railway be* tween Reefton and the Manna. Although unable to obtain any direct and positive information as to the result of tbe survey, we gather from outside sources tbat it fully confirms all that has already been said in favor of the route. The grade on the line will nowhere exceed more than 1 in 50, and wherever bridges wil) be re* quired, they will be comparatively inexpensive in construction. Preference is given to the Lewis' Pass, as being the lowest and most accessible. Tbe party had an exceedingly rounh time of it, as during their nine weeks' absence in tbe bush, fhe weather has been the reverse of favorable for field work, but Mr Henderfc son being tied to time, owing to the near approach of tbo silting of Parliament, operations were pushed on withoul the loso of a single day. In relation to the subject of railway communication, it will be seen by our telegrams this morning that tjie Government have so far met the views of the promoters, that they have promised to introduce a Bill at the nezt session authorising the concession of land as a bonu*-. for railway ennstruction.
