Information has been received by the Admiralty (hat a terrible explosion oc» curred on the British man of«war Do'torel on the 26th April, when off Sandy Point, in straits of Magellan, causing total wreck o f vessel, and great loss of li r e— only the captain and ten others surviving the disaster. Nothing is known as fo the cause of the explosion. The Dottorel was a composite sloop of 900 horse-power. She 'was. builtt*at Chatham last year, and was at the time of the ac» cident on her first commission. New Yobk, May 3. The Star and Herald of Panama says : A war of races has broken out in the valley of Canate in Perth, where more than 2000 Chinamen were barbarously murdered by Negroes and Cbolosos. On one plantation 600 inoffensive were murdered in cold blood, and. all the cane fields, sugar« bouses, machinery, &c, were burned, and property to the value of miilions have been wrecked. The Araneanian Indians are now on the war path. They engaged a Fquadron cf Chilian cavalry, and twelve troopers were killed. The crops have been burned, the cattle driven off, men, women, and chiN dren killed, and all revolting savagery of Indian warfare indulged in. Melboubne, May 4 The returns of census taken on the night of the 3rd ult.. show that the total population of tbo colony of Tictoria is 860,000. Private telegrams from Englacd state that the Highland Railway Company re* ceived the amount of the insurance on the steamer Ferret alias the India, which was reportrd at Hobarfc to have been lost.
