THE Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY FRIDAY, MAY 27, 1881.
The following telegram reached us lost m'Kbt:— MrC. Y. O'Connor's Report npen the Eost and West Coast Railway has been received in Christchurch. Our Engineers' grades over the Ada Pass are confirmed, but he prefers the Lewis Sad« die route, being six miles shorter, not» withstanding that there are five miles with grades of 1 in 25, and five miles with lin 40. Colonial interests will be better served, he thinks, by the Arthur's Pass route, although there would be heavy tunnelling, and for nearly one and a half miles a grade of lin 7. Stationary engines would be necessary to work the line,— Weston and Wickbs." In the absenee of the full Report it is not easy to pronounce at the moment exactly as to whether Mr O'Connor's findings are quite as favorable to the route as was expec« ted. However, the promoters in Christ* church appear to see no reason to com* plain, and it may therefore be accepted that anothor important step has been gained towards the accomplishment of the work. A copy of Mr O'Connor's Report will reach us in a day or two, and j will be at onee laid before the public.
