Mr John Pender, M.P., in presiding at the half yearly meeting of the Eastern Telegraph Company, mentioned recently that £10,00Q had been spent in picking up on one of their cables at a depth of 2000 fathom, which has been 10 years in the water. A Feilding correspondent of the Patea Mail says: — 'We have had a terrible depopulation lately, I don't suppose one house in the township is inhabited. In Halcoinbe it is still worse.'
