It broke out in a thickly populated part, and spread with great rapidity to several blocks of liousps, efforts to allay its progress being for* some time without avail. James the reputed owner of the steamer Ferret alias India, made attempt lvst evening to escape from the Pentridge gaol. He had filed away "a bar of his cell window, and succeeded making his exit from the cell, when he was discovered by the Warders and a person in custody. He now stands committed for trial on charges of conspiracy in connection with the Ferret.
