A Hespatch from Berlin states that while the Czar remains in retirement in Gatcbina 1 , the implacable enemies rf the Government are as dangerously busy as ever Rumours of the daring operations by the Nihilists in disseminating manifestos conveying wirnings to the Czir continue to reach here. On Sunday last the police of St. Perterburg were engaged in searching for a mine near Seminffosky Bridge though nothing was found. The social and political atmosphere is growing thicker, and is freighted with omens of another approaching storm. Private letters dpscribe the city as like a gloomy prison-house, wh^re little is beard of the outside world, and eyery one lives in constant state of painful suspense. The chief journa's still appear with mourning borders-,, Dr Simms' lecture at Dunedin, on 'The teeth, lips, e.ira, mouth, and ey« brows' was (the TTerald says) a great success, and was largely attended. A wide mouth, he said, accompanied large animal imitation, while narrow mouths, with thin lips, denoted a sly and secretive nature. Thick lips were indicative of fondness for children, and vi<-e versa ;long teeth indicated animal cunning, and Fcattered ones selfish* ness. He contrasted the ears of animals and persons to illustrate their musical and non-musical qualities, and soid a red ear signified that it hrn bepn used to musical sounds. Thick flabby ears were unmusical, and small ears were more musical than large ones several ladies and gentlemem were examined.
