Tlie speciil correspondent of the Lytelton Times telegraphs as follows : — The report of 1 Captain Kurae. who was recently appointed I Inspector of Gaols, is in the hands of the Government. The purport of Captain Hume's , recommendations has not leaked out, but I have authority for stating that the report is , of such an illiterate character that Ministers have under consideration the desirability of having it re-written by another person before printing, or of referring it back to Captain' Hume. The report has been described to me as unique in caligruphy, spelling, and grammar. The portland cement manufactured by Mr D. Atkinson has been tested by the GovernDistrict Engineer, with the result that a briquette broken at seven days gave a tensible strain of 3651 b. to the square inch. This is 1 751 b. in excess of the tensible strain required by the New Zealand Government, and also bj the Metropolitan Board of Works, London, which is 2901 b. to the square inch. Mr i Atkinson's cemeut weighs 1181 b more than the English standard. The accuracy of Mr , Reea's former test at New Plymouth may be doubted. A private detective, named Alfred Bishop, has been committed for trial for stealing a sovereign from a woman of ill-fame in Mel- . bourne, Ashmead and the Baroness are just as happy as two sneking doves. Aunt writes us , that he calls her ' Burdie ' and she keeps her teeth in his shaving mug. The revised New Testament is printed in paragraphs, the chapters and verses not being indicated except in the margin.
