COUNTY CNTRACTS.

[to the EDITOB IKASO_nnA timbs.]

Sib,— As I obiect to my name being made use of by tbe Inangahna Herald for the purpose of justifying anr of Mr L. Davies' actions, allow me to contradict the statement reported in last Thursday's issue of that paper, in the mater of the late compensations to tbe contractors for tbe Longford road, Tbe Herald repotted that I moved a certain ppg, for wbieb tbe contractors claimed £20 for extra work caused thr ugh the removal of tbe peg. The facts are I did remove tbe peg, but it was back into its proper position, as indicated by the plan of the road ; but it bad been removed io avoid cutting away tbe point of a spur by some- person, and not wi'h my permission. The next item was reported as a mistake between 7.13

claim was made. My reply to that also J is tbat on tbe plan and section of tbe road tbe contractors signed 17 13 is plainly figured ; and more than that, it only required to add the grade aod reduced levels together that were figured immediately below the figures above noted to prove that 17.13 mnst of a necessity be tbe quantity. Farther, it was suggested by tbe County Chairman tbat I be requested to attend a meeting of tbe Council, to explain anything in connection with tbe matter ; bnt this would not chord witb the ideas of Mr L. Davies wbo, upon this, as well as upon every one of these compensation arrangements, bas religiously ignored the written opinion of the Connty Solicitor. Sir, as the Herald never fails to mistate facts in connection with anything I bave been concerned in, I request that you will publish this. . I am, &c,. WILLIAM GARDNER, Late County Engineer. Beefton, July 1, 1881, ;
