At a meeting of gold fields members held on Saturday to consider the question of gold duty, it was resolved that R. C. Reid, member for Hokitika, should more in the House a resolution to the effect that it is expedient that the duty on gold be abolished, and that the Government bring in a Bill accordingly. It is expected there will be some warm work to-night over proposals re Local Goyernment. Wellington, July 12. Joseph Solomon' action for alleged breach of promise of marriage was heard in the Supreme Court this morning. Tbe defendant appeared said he was and always had been prepared to fulfill his promise. Plaintiff's counsel said this was first they bad heard of such a thing, and plaintiff pressed for only reparation possible under circumstances. Verdict : £125.
