IMPORTANT DISCOVERY AT STAWEKKM, VICTORIA.

* The most important mining discovery made at Stawell for many years past has just been reported. It bos been proved tbat tbe large reef now being passed through by the diamond drill in the Crown Cross United Mine has the width of 6ft and contains gold. The core was tested, and the result given is more than ordinary good. This will be the first payable reef ever worked at such a depth, the distance from the lode to tbe surface being nearly 17.0Qffc. The theory is now being considered whether &i the depth nnmed there is not another net-work of reefs such as have been worked nearor to the surface. The bore was put in at an angle of one in four, so that when the shaft is put io vertically down on a level with the depth at present attained, there will be 91ft Bin to drive. Tbe work of getting at

this fine lode will occupy, with the most modern applicances, at least n year, and the coet will be about £4000. It is supposed that the first reef pierced in this shaft is vertical, and that it is a flat reef. The discovery is expected to open out a new era in mining, not only at Stawell, but in all the quartz goldfields of the colony. |
