« The following letter appears in the Auckland Star (—To the Editor : Sir, — While we may admire White for his pluck we certainly cannot praise him for his prudence. He who throw* down the gauntlet to any man in New Zealand should hare some better test of his own merits than the mere non acceptance for a considerable time of bis published challenges. These might have been taken up long before (even by the province of Auckland oarsman) if for a reasonably small amount ; and in this way we Bhould hare been more statisSed that Auckland bad really, sent her best man.-^Yours, &, Peu* dence.
