INANGAHUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

» A special meeting of the Council was held at the Chambers, on Monday evening, the Ist instaat. The meeting had | been adjourned on two previous occasions ! for want of a quorum, which was now present, consisting of the Chairman, and Messrs Trerinery, Williams, Plaskett, and Feehan. The Chairman, in opening the business, stated that the meeting had been called for the object of receiving and consider* ing the petition of certain ratepayers for the levying of a separate rate for fire prevention purposes. The petition showed that a majority of ratepayers, namely, seventy-six, out of the total number within the boundaries specified, had signed the document. A. oounter petition b«<jl also been handed in, but being ins formal ijt could not be received. It was thereupon moved by Mr Williams, that the petition of the ratepayers be received, and that the Council make and levy a separate rate of threepence in the poirnd on the rateable value of property within the limits described.

i Mr Trennery, in seconding the rcs>lution, said that he recognised the necessity of keeping up tha efficiency of the • V.F.B. by rendering assistance for main- , taining in working order tbe engine, «nd I other applianeeg which had been pro--1 vided at great cos', but he admitted that the contemplated rate was not very popnlar outside of Central Broadway, as it was urged that in many places within the sub-division proposed to be rated no water would be available for the engine in case of a fire, and he, therefore, trasfed that the Chairman would point out to the > brigade the advisability of sicking wells 1 where required. The Chairman promised to attend to i the suggestion made by Mr Trennery, 1 and after Mr Flaskett had spoken in opposition to the resolution, it was put, and declared carried. Moved by Mr Feehan, seconded by Mr Williams, that a special meeting of the Council be called for Friday, the 1 2nd day of September, 1881, to confirm the foregoing resolu' ion— Carried. Tbe meeting then adjourned.
