At the criminal sessionsjof the Supreme Court, JWhUesideT^charged with attempting to bribe Edward O'Brien Hefferman, a servant of the Government, by saying to him 3 " If we get our land at Korororika, I wiU'make you a present of £200." He was found guilty, and fined £'2150. y.<A ■

The'Wanaka left* wuh3;tbe Soushern San Francisco mail st 9 this morning. Tbe mail steamer left at 3 o'clock in the afternoon for Sydney. Henly, agent, and the Mendelssohn Quintette Troupe, were through passengers from Sun Frano'sco. The company will ptass through Auckland for Australia next month.

New Plymouth, August 22. A meeting of the Working Men's Society was held on Saturday. Over 200 men were present, and they resolved to seed a petition to both Houses of Parliament, asking that harbour works be not stopped, during the enquiry made by the Royal Commissioners. The petition was signed by 600 men- A large number of the workmen's wives were outside the ball waiting to hear the iresolution. Chbistchubch, August 24. In the Magistrate's Court ibis morning, John Sanson, Henry Blackett. and John Hossage, were charged with assault and wilful damage to property at tbe office of the Liberty newspaper. On the applica.tion of Stringer, the case was again adjourned to enable tbe parties concerned to settle the matter out of cyurt,
