THE REBURIAL OF THE LATE POPE.
♦ A disgraceful scene (snys the Euro < pean mail) occurred on the occasion of tbe ceremonies attendant upon the removal of the body of Pius IX. from its temporary resting-place, The vault was opened in the presence of-Monsig-nori Pericoli, Appolloni, and Machi, the entire Chapter of Sc Peter's, and Padre I) omenico Molitorno, rector of San Lorenzj, who was charged to re*ceive tbe body, After the opening of the outer case of wood and the verifica** tion of the seals on the leaden coffin among which isibat of the present Pope who waa then Chatnberiian, tbe body was carried to the chapel, the choir meanwhile chanting a ' Miserere ' ia undertones. The ceremony with the church, over, the body was placed on a funeral car and covered with tbe historical crimson draperies, embroidered with gold, which has been used to decorate the Loggia della Beaedizione since the time of Innocent IU, At The moment of startiog the Piazza wa* illuminated by the Bengal light, which with the thousand torches carried by the assistants, produced an extraordi* nary effect. The procession, surrounded and followed by an immense mass of people proceeded quietly for some distance, until cries began to arise in the crow! of 'VivaT Italia' 'Viva Garibaldi,' replied to be those foU lowing the hearse with counter cries of ' Viva Pio Nono,' * Vive II Papa Re.' Then a most scandalous and disgraceful scene commenced. The torches were sc'zsd and extinguished, sticks were freely use l, and the funeral car was urged forward at a trot, surrounded by breathless priests, whose loud chanting was parbly drowned by the cities and hooting. Lines of palice were fomed across the streets, and were twice broken through. Along the immense length of Nia Nazionale tbe scene was indescribably painful, the (procession being received with uproar. Of 6000 torches surrounding the bier at St Peter's only a few hundred? reached the cemetery. Here two companies of soldiers kopt the crowded in check ; but during tho final coremonies of interment in Sin Lorenzo the noi-*e of the crewd outside was distinctly audible. The majority of the respectable citizjens naturally condemn this demonstration ; but blame is also cast on The Govern* ment fov not having taken sufficient precautions. Others, declare that the demonstration was provoked by the clercial party. Several diplotnitists have suggested to the Pope that they should make a formal protest, assuring him of support of the Catholic Powers. In two or three days a Special Congregation will he held co consider the matter.
