ROBBERY AT THE BAKL OF VICTORIA.
« Muoh excitement was occasioned id town yesterday when it became known that notes to ihe value of over, £2500 had been stolen fr->m the head office of the B.inlc of Victoria, in Collinsstreet The officials of the bank dis* pbyed a great nnxiety to keep the matter secret, au<l absolutely refused any information on the subject, Not* withstanding, we have been able to ascertain the correctness of the fact that the robbery referred to has taken place, notes to (he value of £2500 being missing. On this sum £1500, it is believed, is in £50 notes, and the remainder in 'loose ' notes — a mature of tens, fiveß and ones. Thtre seems to be no doubt that the theft must have been committed by some of the officers of the bank though at present it would not be prudent to indicate more clearly were suspicion attaches. The actual date pt' *hq., rn bl?tf c y ciL nnn JLJ?fl -J3fJ3'jtg]yfixsd, but as the notes were lost checked on 2 ad September, when) everything was found to be right the missing ones must have been abstracted some lime between that day and the 15th September when robbery was discovered. The notes have been taken from those entrusted to the msto'y of on« of fellers. It appears that the rule of the institution is that the tellers, having made up their cash encH evening, should entrust the bos to their check clerks, after passing through whose hands it is eventually placed in the strongroom. The notes, in fact, pass though three or four han-ls both morning and evening- In this instance it is sup* posed that money was stolen from the payirig teller's box. as two bundles of notes he hid placed in his box on the 2nd inst. correspond with those stolen. On that occasion be obtained a receipt for the notes he handed over. At first it was supposed that the notes had been mislaid, but this was soon discovered not to be so. The matter was then reported to the Detective department, and two | members of the force bad the case placed in their hands. The ioqairies they have instituted have, not resulted in any actual discovery, but it is fancied that the robbery mast have been committed on Wednesday night or Thursday moroiog* on which day the theft was discovered.
