Since his return to Christchurch M r Weston has worked unceasingly to re* kindle interest in the East and West Coast railway project, agd. so far his ex* ertions appear to have been attended with highly gratifying results,. The meeting held in Christchurch on Mon« day last was numerously attended, and amongst the speakers present were many of the most influential business and other residents of the city. Two thousand shares were subscribed for in the room,, and a reßolufrOn was carried affirming the desirability of at once forming a com* pany to carry out the undertaking. Tbe bearing of the new l?ai|tvay Oonsi ruction Act upotvtbe wo*k was fully considered, and it was shown that the Act covered all the concessions required by the company. This circumstance added to the many assurances of support received by the promoters during the pnsjb few days, folly prepared the way for the resolution which has been adopted, and each day will henceforth bring fresh strength to the agitation. Tbe number of shares required to be taken up in order to enable tbe promoters to bring tbe company under the operation of the Railway Construction Act is not large, and as the Bchetne bas now been fairly pushed into public notice, there is every reason to betieve that they will be disposed of 'without delay. Ihe promoters entertain no doubt whatever of their ability to engage Englialj capitalists in the undertaking. It is not to be denied that there bas been a great lack of interests shown on the West Coast respecting the under* taking', but this has no doubt arisen, not from any~want of apprciation of its, great importance to this part of the Colony, but to an over estimate of the difficulties in the way of its realisation Now, however, that it is being shown the proposal is something more /Tian a mere plea«ing day-drenm, a more active cooperation. will be expected of the people on this side of the rnnge, and it should certinlv not. b.a expected in"vain.
