REUTER'S CABLEGRAMS. I I [fbom oub own correspondent.] London, October 12. A banquet took place at Newcastle on Tyne last night, under Conservative auspices. The Marquis of Salisbury, Sir Stafford Northcote, and other leaders of the party were present, and spoke on the occasion. The Marquis of Salisbury in bis speech referred to! the state of affairs in South Africa, and |tated that he was confident that the Government would again ha\e to *eat dirt' in the Transvaal. Sir Stafford Nortbcote spoke on the question of England's commercial relations with other Powers, and repudiated the idea that Conservatives favored the adoption of a policy of pf o* tection. The presence of a French man*of«war at Alexandria at the present juncture having caused some'eomraent in political circles, it has been , explained by the French authorities that the vessel is merely making her usual periodical visit, and that her presence in Egyptian waters has no connection with recent events in that country. £260,000 was to-day withdrawn from the Bank of England for Egypt. Washington, October 12. The obstruction on the part of the Democratic senator haying been withdrawn, the newly elected Republican senator has been admitted, and has taken his seat in the Senate. The race for the Czarewitch Stakes was run to«day near Newmarket, with the following result :— J. K. Inne.", Minister of, Justice, will be his successor. Dr. Eenwick, M.L.A., for East, Sydney, has been appointed Secretary for Mines vice E. A. Baker, resigned in August laßt. Melbourne, October 12. The embezzlement of £8000 by the two clerks in the employ of Messrs Kronhiroer and Co has been discovered. Books of the firm have been falsified by the defrauders, who have absconded Port Darwin, October 13 Mails and passengers of the steamer Brisbane have been landed, but the vessel is still on the reef
