UNITED ALPINE.
Mr Wright has during the. past fortnight opened out ft large bod/ of stone north of the intermediate level. At firit the ran was oflly a few inches in thickness, and hands were pat on with the view of blocking oat what was thought would only continue a few feet and then disappear, bat instead of the atone running out it has developed into a large reef running almost north and south. Thit r*ef at the time of my visit to*day was fire feet in thickness, and still showed a tendency to increase in width. It carries good gold, and as it is further north than any lode yet worked between Nos. 2 and 5 levels and is running in quite an opposite direction to lodes in other parts of the mine, it will have the effect of very greatly iscreasing the value of the property. Should this run of stone continue north another 140 or 150 feet, it will give upwards of 700 feet of backs. The manager will break through into the old workings in the vicinity of No. 4 level, in order to obtain more air, and will then be better enabled to carry on stoping. This new find is very dry, which is quite the opposite case with the more southerly .frorkings. In the level between the intermediate and Nos. 5 levels the reef maintains an average of about ten feet in thickness. There are abont 40 hands engaged in the mine, and a good supply of quartz is going forward to the mill. The contract for the •first 300 feet of the No. 6 level has been completed, and the tender of Win. Willcocks, at 26s 9d per foot, was accepted by the directors on Wednesday, for extending the level a further distance of 500 feet: At the battery, Mr Waters has now the four berdans at work, so that a slight increase in the monthly yield of gold may be looked for; ;
