COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTIONS.

had been called together for the purpose of selecting two eundidates to contest the Reefton seat, and it should be understood that which ever two gentlemen to«night be decided upon, the ratepayers would be considered pledged to vote for them on tbo polling day. The present step had been taken purely with the object of preventing any division of opinion in the voting, and be trusted that once a selection wa3 made it would be strictly respected on tlie day df election. He would now be glad to receive nomina* tions. Mr W. H. Jones was proposed by Mr Aiken, and seconded by Mr Hankiu. Mr Robert Patterson was proposed by Mr M'Lean, and seconded by Mr fehnw. Mr W, J. Potts was proposed by Mr A. Campbell, and seconded by Mr James Barrowman. Mr Mirfin wished to make 8 few remarks. He quite endorsed the object of the meeting and would consider himself pledge to support the two candidates who might be selected, but at the same time he viewed the last nomination in the light of an amendment. Now there should be no dissension. They should act firmly together, and go in honestly, truthfully, and sincerely, on the polling day, be would vote for the two candidates selected. j The Chairman saiJ that although it had been understood privately that two of the gentlemen already proposed should receive the support of the meet|ing, it was quite competent for any person present to nominate others, and they would all go to the ballot. Mr Uobert Oxley was proposed by Mr Joice, and seconded^ by Mr W. Cocbrane, Mr W. G-. Collings was proposed by Mr Blakely, and seconded by Mr Dykes, A ballot was then taken, with the following result :— No. polled Mr W. H. Jones ... 41 Mr Robert Patterson ... 31 Mr Robert Oxley ... 11 Mr W. J. Potts 9 Mr W. G. Collings ... 3 It was then proposed by Mr Preshaw, seconded by Mr Aiken, that Messrs Jones and Patterson be the two candidates selected to contest the Reefton seat at the coming County election*. The motion was then put, and carried unanimously. A committee was then formed to make arrangements for the polling day, and the meeting adjourned with] a vote of thanks ; to the chair.
