Beaumont (merchant), and Hugh M'llraith, member of the House of l-epresentative*, start on Friday by coach to Greymoath and Keefton, to report on tbe railway scheme to the Chamber of Commerce. Mr Whitefoord could not go. He sent tbe following letter to Mr Weston, member of the House of Representatives, for the Inangahua t—* 1 Dear Mr Weston, I have Just Written to the Hon. John Hall slating my reasoos why I thought it better C should not act on tbe East and West Coast Railway Commission, I have declined the offer witb much regret, but I feel I am acting in tbe interest of tbe promoters in taking tbe course I have adopted. The project itself is one which I take the warmest interest, and one I have in every way in my power pro* mo ted since I came io reside in Canterbury, and it was entirely at my solicitation tbat Mr Rolleston, then the Superintendent of Canterbury, and Mr Carruthers, Engineer»in- Chief, accom** panied me from Canterbury to the West Coast via Ahaura, for the purpose of inspecting one of the proposed East and West Coast railway routes, I feel that tbe scheme which you so earnestly advocate will, if carried ont, result in a grand success both for Canterbury and the West Coast, and when once completed will largely benefit the colony generally. The vast coal and timber re* sources of the West Coast will, I think, be tapped by a railway within a very short distance of the great dividing range, and at Once supply an inexhaustin ble traffic, while the effect upon the mining interest at Reeftoo and elsewhere would be to increase tbe general prosperity of the district, and attract a very large additional population. I shall look forward to the report ofthe commission with great interest, and not a little confidence that it wiil be as favorable a 9 you can desire. Believe me, yours very .ai.hfully-— C_ j_eb Whitefoobd."
