WARDEN'S COURT.

TrjE?DAT, 20th Decembeb, 1881. (Before Mr Warden Revell.) A. D. am one of the objectors ; I know the I ground applied for ; whore I have been working if- baa paid roe well ; I wou'd not speculate in a company where it was intended to crush the lot ; I object to the application oh the ground lhat were it granted I could not get another claim after I was done with the present ; I don't think leases should be granted in a district were the labour market fluctunles. My present dam will be useless after my claim is worked out. Cross-examined by Mr Bayfeild : I hare been at Lankey's 20 months ; were I convinced lhat it would be to my advantage I would crush instead of washing my cement as at present ; I cannot say what wafer is, obtainable ia Lankey's. There are only two races, and in ord nary wet weather there is enough of water ; as a matter of fact I have had to deluy washing up for want of water ; I have not washed up for six or se?en months. Archer Seabrighr, miner, woiking at L:inkvJ;s. Since I have been woiking (here I find no difficulty in working the ground profitably ; I believe »he ground applied for wou'd pay by ordinary mode of washing ; I think that men would have taken up ground there had Mr Bayfeild not applied for the lease. Cross-examined by Mr Eayfeild : I have been there six months, and have been making £4 per week. As a fact I 6nd gold in my tailings, which are losf. You took up the ground just before the men were knocked off by the Energetic and Fleece ; I know of no other country available ; I have heard of other leases being applied for. Benjamin Roberts, miner, Lankey's Gully— Since I have been there, I have found no difficulty in working; my ground. Always had water to work, as I can slack al^out 300 tons before washing; I think that ordinary claims would have been taken up, had it not been applied for under lea«e. In rainy weather there is water enough to wash for 40 men. The Sea-King application encroaches upon my ground about 100 feet. Oosß-«amined by Mr Buyfeild— l have been at Lnnkey's about three months ; I pegged out my claim on the day previous to your application ; I have had a washing when we were three mates — it diJ not pay. Now I consider that I can make £3 per week. Had I l>een at work elsewhere I would not have gone there. Were a Inrge bat'ery erected a sjreat number of men would be employed at it— in fact more than at present ; lam crushing my cement with a hammer be fore washing it ; I do not get all the gold. Cross^eximined by objectors — It would co^t 10* per ton to take out the cement by a company, and it would cost five or six sbiilings per ton for crushing.
