REEFTON JOCKY CLUB.
sum|mi meeting. Favored with gloriou3 weather nnd a large attendance, circumstances were highly favorable for the opening day of the ranee. From an early hour in the morning visitors began to -pour into town from all the outride places, and up to noon he streets were alire with people, all berty upon the same mission, .Shortly after 11 p'clock the crowed began to move in the direction of itfre course, which being distant little more than a quarter of a mile^fi.om town, was soon reached. Some"thins* like 1200 "persons paid at the gate?, whilo there were probably half as many more children, so that the muafer upon the couivo w&s a very re.*p6cfabld o>te. ; The course is very pleaeaiitly situaUd, .growing timber, affording ngreeablo fheltering-places for loungers. A commodious and substantial grand stand had been erected, but it was not ro well patronised as might have been expec» ted, owing probabl^tp^bo high tariff charged — 4s, ana also to *the"fect, that the stand faces the sun, and is without shelter. It can hardly JbiM^^hauhiftgirit^f hprae -racing .*aa faff?. a y^%^Pgst tKe people; TThe^ * which was in nR^ respects foreign to tb^ occasion, For much of this the Ghmingand Lotteries Act is v.o doubt responsible as in the absence of sweep- making it was hard to eu9tain interest be* tween the races, and the intervals by-the-by were real publicans' ones. True the totalisator was there, but people for a long time shied at it, as a new enemy to to their breeches pockets. Money was, however, very plentiful, and by the close of the day about £1 000 had been staked on the machine the the largest odds drawn on any event being £22 103 for eaoh £1 invested. Beyond this there was litfle or no betting. There were no; games of Sny kind on the course, not even the much»belovod " Aunt Sally," whom, it is to be supposed had never been invited. 3for was the man there with the rings and the knives, or in fact any one of those mysterious and benevolent personages who usually drop from the clouds at race gatherings with fortunes for simpletons to win. The absence of these accessories made the gaps between the e cents very dreary, and seem longer than they really were. It was a drawback also that boys were allowed to lend horses about the course in front of the grand etand, thus excluding the. public from the only comfortable prominado. Of the "racing as a whole not much can be said. The only horse, next to Lillipie, fit to make, a race for any of the chief events— The Baf^-an off the course on each occasion, and.epoilt all interest in ths running. The hurdles also wore of a very gingerbread construction, and when knocked over were allowed to remain down til the close of the race. We believe, however, that every race wae honestly contested, nnd as tbia is the M*hesMt^«~ ah/mt the only . oompli* jnent the ocfnridn eaih forth. -- =^-" MONDAY, DECEMBER" 26th, If ßl. 1.
