UNITED ALPINE.
Rising for the winze has not yet been commenced, as the curve in the tunnel will take a short time longer to complete. Nothing further has been done towards opening up the reef in the lower level.
Meetings of shareholders in the Republic, No 2 Alpine, and Ballarat Companies were held at Mr Clark's office on Saturday last. Rules were adopted, and all preliminaries for registration completed. Mr J. F. Clark was appointed manager of each company. We are glad, to note the addition of these important properties to the mining ventures already in the field.
Prospecting has for some time past been carried on a reef about 15 inches in thickness situated in a creek about 2 miles above Lyell township. Gold was found in the stone about four weeks since, by Mr H. White, and a strong party was then formed with the view of thoroughly proving the existence of payable gold in the reef. It has been trenched for some distance, and operations have been so far successful that the prospects have warranted the shareholders applying for leases along the ljne. Three applications have been lodged at the Warden's office and we understand that it is intended to pui^lftjtfmcls to further test the permanency of the find.
