NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT WANT.
We have hoard a good deal lately as to the favorable nature of Australian comments upon New Zealand. The following extract from the South Australian Register may postible prove intructive as well as interesting : — The great want of Now Zealand is lornl ««:v?rrrnent. The capital of the
country is at such a distance from the outlying parts, and on the other hand there are to many towns which can claim to rank as the local centres of government, that unless some satisfactory system of provincial administration is adopted to provide for the construction of roads and public works of certain descriptions, a separation of the various provinces will assuredly sooner or later take place. It is galling for a resident in Otago, for instance, to see the taxes collected in Dunedin going up to the Treasury at Wellington, and thence being doled out in small sums for the maintenance of works which ought properly to be under municipal or district control. New Zealand of all the Australian Colonies needs local government most, and yet it seems likely that she will be the last to adopt it. This is a matter of primary importance which is being overlooked. Meanwhile the Premier is exercising his intellect upon the subject of Upper House Reform. New Zealand is in urgent need of other reforms, which should take precedence even of the amendment of the Constitution.
