A tremendous conflagration occurred here last evening, resulting in the detraction of a large amount of valuable ni'OTU'ity. spread to the adjoining buildings. The lire broke out at 10 o'clock, and at 12 o'clock the following buildings had been destroyed : — CitX Butchery, Mrs Hanhana's grocery store, Hibernian Hotel, Droche's grocery and wine and spirit store, unoccupied building, known as the Red, Lion Hotel, M'Cluskey's bootshop, Hannan's Temple of Science, Brown's drapery store, and Cooper's jeweller shop. At midnight the tire was still raging with unabated fury, and in order to save the- remainder of the block strenuous efforts were made to pull down the shops occupied by J. Rogers, tailor, W. Petersen, bootmaker, and Roeside, pastrycook. It is hoped that this course will save the White Swan Hotel, and buildings to the northward of it. The brigade worked well, but were hampered by scarcity of water. By 1-30 the fire was got under sufficiently to secure the safety of the White Swan Hotel. The total known insurances are about LBOOO Wellington, January 5. Thehon. Charles Johnston Pharazyn, M.L.C., was indicted on a charge of personation. The jury found " That Pharazyn voted twice, but are of opinion that the second vote was given under the impression that he was voting at a different electorate for another Candida^." His Honor remarked that the offence was not for voting a second time, but applying for a voting paper a second time, and proceeded to re-write the verdict in the following form, which he said the jury might adopt, amend, or reject: — "The jury find that Pharazyn having voted once at an election for Thorndon, did apply at the same election for a voting paper in his own name, but so applied under impression that. he was voting at a different electorate for another candidate. The jury adopted this verdict adding words, "and believe mistake was honestly made." His Honor and Mr Allen thought this amounted to a verdict of guilty, Mr Pharazyn, however, contended that it amounted to one of not guilty. Eventually it was decided that the point should be argued subsequently in Court of Pppeal, and defendant was liberated on entering into his own recognisances of LSO, to appear for judgment when called upon to do so. Lyell, January 5. Walter Moffatt was drowned whilst fording the Matakitaki to-day.
