LYELL MINING. (Times) UNITED ALPINE. Thursday, January 12. AH hands sloping. The reef above the ! intermediate level north at present has the appearance of an immense quarry, being some 35 feet in thickness. There is nothing new to report from this mine. The battery during last month* was only running ten days, reducing 635 tons of stone, which yielded 225 ozs retorted gold. This, on being melted only lost the very small percentage ofl7dwts.. the return being 224 ozs 3 dwts melted gold, value £865 15s 6d. The directors were not in a position to declare the usual dividend. CRCESUS. Work in the winze has had to be discontinued owing to the volume of water being to great. It is now probable that the company will decide upon driving a i second level, For the time being the I hands will be employed extending the present main level along the line of reef. The contractors for construction of shoot completed the work this afternoon ; it hag been earned out in a most substantial I manner. I LYELL CREEK EXTENDED. holders was hold on Monday last at this office of Mr Jas Inglis. Messrs Lee and : Shaw were present on behalf of the Roefton shareholders; all the shares in the Company being represented. It was decided to register " under the Mining Companies Act 1872, in 20,000 ahares of £1 each. Messrs Campbell, Green, Guthrie, M'Laughlin, and Bruce, were elected directors, and Mr J. F. Clark, manager, The meeting was adjourned until 8 p.m. on Saturday for the purpose of adopting Rules, &c. As soon as registration is completed, work will be commenced on the lease, which should soon rise into importance. The ground possesses natural advantages for easy working, and the outlay required should not be great. UNITED VICTORY (New Creek). The curve in this company's lower level will be completed early next week. Rising for the winze will then immediately be commenced. Extension of the level along the reef will also be taken in hand. The hands at the battery house are making fair progress, but the balance of the machinery to complete the last five head is not yet quite all delivered ; it will however, be on the ground within a few days. VICTOR EMANUEL During the late heavy rains a large slip came down in the vicinity of this company's mine destroying the tunnel, and burying a quantity of tools. A new tunnel has now been started in a westerly direction in a more solid part of the hill. Two shifts are engaged in the work. It will require to be driven about 60 feet before reaching the line of reef. Some really good specimens have been brought in from the mine during the past few days. It is now proven beyond a doubt that this is a permanent and payable line of reef, and it is daily becoming more and more a matter of absolute necessity that the County Council should take in hand the construction of a track up New Creek, so that the companies on the line may obtain access to their holdings. I trust our members will not lose sight of this important work at the next meeting of the Council.
