REEFTON ATHENAEUM.
A general meeting of subscribers to the Reef ton Athenreum were held at the Reading Room to the institution on Friday evening, when there were present : — Mcssr? T,u<-as, Chi-Ho-*, M'R.inth, C.new,
Preshaw, Broad, Krui>;ei;gsi, fjt.-^i. Sh,-r.v. I Sampson, Gardner, Roulston, M'Lauguim, j | Wise, Blakely, Lee, Heuer, Cereseto, Reid, Frascr, and Faler. Mr R. Chattock was voted to the chair, and opened the business. I The minutes of the previous meeting were on a motion of Mr Shaw read and confirmed. The Secretary then read the balancesheet and report of the outgoing committee, showing a credit in favour of the institution of £13 Bs, which were on a motion of Mr Gardner, seconded by Mr Lucas, received and approved. A letter from Mr Schulhof, containing a proposal to let the whole of the premises, including the front shop, and to provide light, fuel, and attendance and care, with additional furniture to the institution at 30s. per week, was then discussed, and as it was urged that this would give direct access to the rooms from the front street, thus rendering them more accessible to the general public, the 1 proposal was favourably entertained, and ; ultimately accepted on a motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Gardner. : Considerable discussion then ensued as i to the yearly subscriptions of members, , which it was found necessary to increase in order*- to provide for books to the library, and for the additional outlay for extended and more commodious premises. 1 Various buggestions were made, and the subject fully gone into, when it was decided on a motion of Mr Gardner to fix I the 'yearly subscription of members ns - follows : — Admittance to the whole, of the > institution, £1 ; to the reading room only, 15a ; to the library, 10s. Previous to the election of the commit- - tee, it was moved by Mr MTJeath that . rule 4be altered with a view to shorten the term of office, seconded by Mr Lucas, but lost on the voices. The nomination and election of the t committee for the ensuing 12 months, rer suited in the return of Messrs Sampson, , Preshaw, M'Laughlin, Broad, Carew, r Steele, and Roulston. A cordial vote of thanks having been • accorded to the outgoing committee and secretary, it was moved by Mr Preshaw, seconded by Mr Wise, that Mr Broad act as secretary and treasurer, which was unanimously carried, and a vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the njpst animated meeting of the institution ever held in Reefton.
