The exemption of ground at Waimangaroa from gold mining refers only to ground held under coal leaseß, and for which special permits to work are likely to be granted. Misunderstanding on this point has made Reefton speculators charry f of purchasing Westport stock. Auckland, February 10 The enquiry into the Oxford stabbing case is concluded, and the Maori, (Makairi), has been committed for trial. Whitaker, his counsel, reserved defence, and declined to prosecute Penia, lest in doing so he should disclose Makairi's defence. At nomination of Licensing Commissioners for Auckland, east, north, and south, the Licensed Victuallers and Good Templars each picked three men. Nominations for withdrawals in order to get a common ticket are, however, to be made subsequently. February 11. A. company with a capital of £100, 000 is being floated here, for the purpose of establishing a large flour-mill and granary. Napier, February 10. A most disastrous fire occurred this evening, just after 8 o'clock. The fire broke out in a building occupied by Fair, draper, (late of Charleston), who bought the stock of Price and Innes about month ago. It is conjectured that an explosion of gas was the cause, as the fire see-qaed to burst out simultaneously in all parts of the shop, and spread with fearful rapidity. In twenty minutes fifteen thousand pounds worth of property was destroyed. Wellington, February 11. Nomination of members of Licensing Committees took place yesterday, and to-day a$ lall the chief centres of population. 'In some districts the Good Templars and Temperance bodies have coalisced with the publicans in the nomination of candidates. Considerable surprise was caused here at the discovery made on Thursday that Messenger, champion oarsman of Victoria, who arrived hereon Thursday, had been rowing in Auckland under the alia* Carter. It will be remembered he recently defeated White of Mercury Bay in two matches, changing boats on last occasion. When taunted with the fraud, Messenger admitted everything. He now issues a challenge to row anyone in the Colony, stipulating, however, that the match must not be rowed in Wellington harbor.
