Further reduction in the Civil Ser vice are contemplated by the Ministry, by amalgamation of the Department of Justice with that of Colonial Secretary and under the permanent control of the Under-Secretary for the Colonies. Dunedix, February 21, A fire occurred this morning in Dowling street, by which a small wooden house, occupied by a man and his wife, named Bissiski, was destroyed. Bissiski and his Avife escaped by a window, leaving behind four children aged thirteen, eight, six, and four years respectively, who all perished. A misapprenhension arose amongst the
spectators as to the safety of the children, consequently no efforts were made to save them, little attention being paid to the maddening screams of the mother. CiiHiSTCHURCn, February 21. Pellett, -whose election was petitioned against l>y Cowlishaw, has been unseated by the Electoral Court. The Hon. Edward Richardson, S. P. Andrews, Edward Wakefield, are probable candidates.
