INANGAHUA COUNTY COUNCIL.
A telegram was received from Messrs Wickes, Weston, and M'Crae, respecting the securing of two bays in the Christchurch Exhibition, and to forward lists of exhibits before the 10th of March.
Resolved to be dealt with by the Exhition Committee.
A letter from Mrs Green, asking for aid to support herself and children left destitute by the death of her husband.
Resolved that the matter be not enter-
tamed,
After some discussion, it was moved by Mr Williams, and seconded by Mr Patterson, and carried, that providing that he does not hold the Council liable for cost in the event of failure, Mr Arnott's offer for fixing Abyssinian standpipes in the town of Reefton, be accepted.
A proposal made by the County Engineer in his report, to maintain the roads in the County during 12 months by day labour at an estimated cost of £1700 per annum, was discussed, and it was moved by Mr Williams, seconded by Mr Feehan, and carried, that the mode of maintaining the main roads submitted by Mr Garvin, be tested for twelve months.
Moved by Mr Feehan, that tenders be called at an early date for the erection of a bridge opposite Wilson's hotel in the business part of Capleston. Seconded by Mr Byrne, and carried. Mr Williams drew the attention of the Council to the fact that no steps had been taken to provide Mr Johnston at the Blackwater with a road to his house from the main road, from the benefit of which he had been debarred by means of the Council having left the site of his house some distance off the main road then made. This question had been before the Coud^ on a.piroLous occasion, and tiie Engineer had been instructed to prepare an estimate which had been done and given at £72, but nothing more had been done in the mntter.
A discussion ensued when several members expressed themselves opposed to the project. It was then proposed by Mr Williams, seconded by Mr Feehan, that the sum of £72 be expended in a manner already discussed.
The motion was put, and lost.
Moved by Mr Feehan, seconded by Mr Craig, and carried, that a sum not exceeding £5 be expended on the Pactolus track leading from the Fiery Cross battery.
Referring to the Carriboo track, the Chairman stated ihat it had been found that specifications had to be submitted first to the Government Engineer before a subsidy could be obtained.
Moved by Mr Feehan, that the Engineer be instructed to prepare plans, specifications, and estimates, for the construction of a horse-track from Capleston to the left-hand branch, which was very urgently required, as a number of men were put to great inconvenience for the want of it.
Seconded by Mr Byrne, and ouAfcd. Proposed by Mr Craig, $|||KiWd by Mr Byrne, and carried, that^the road round the slip be widened, so as to make it accessible for the larger waggons, which now cannot pass.
