A novel walking match, recently took place at Hampden, is thus described in the North Otago Times : — We had a little excitement in our otherwise, quiet township a few days age, our sporting boniface, Mr Wm. M'Kay, backing himself to walk any | horse in the district one mile for the j sum of 10 guineas. The offer was taken up by Joseph Culling of Hillgrove. The contestants met at Moeaki Hotel, and after a few of the usual preliminaries made a good start The pedestrian grained at least 40 yards in tiie first hundred, after which the horse — an 18 years 'old one— gradually diminished the distance, till at the finish there was only about a dozen yards separating them. The time was 10 minutes 27 seconds. There is likely to be smother match, the loser not being at all satisfied with the result. She-aid they start again, there am many who think the quadruped will stand a good show. The affair was done in a sportsmanlike manner, the stakes being paid over with a little homely chaff
