M'Kay, backing himself to walk any | horse in the district one mile for the j sum of 10 guineas. The offer was taken up by Joseph Culling of Hillgrove. The contestants met at Moeaki Hotel, and after a few of the usual preliminaries made a good start The pedestrian grained at least 40 yards in tiie first hundred, after which the horse — an 18 years 'old one— gradually diminished the distance, till at the finish there was only about a dozen yards separating them.
