THE DIAMOND DRILL.

The following is the performance of a diamond drill in operation in Victoria from August 11th to October 10th of last Jyear. Without going into a weekly detailed account, the average depth obtained for a week was about 93 feet. As will be seen from the date of stai-ting to the end of the term above named, there was f»o6ft Gin sunk ; of course necessary more or less time would be lost in effecting repairs to tho compressor and waiting for the bits, &c. The country through which this work was carried was blue rock and quartz veins. ? T o?t miners who

may read this are conversant with the hardness of tho blue rock of Victoria and having that knowledge of the character of the country, it will bo readily perceived the many advantages that will be derived by all concerned through .the introduction of this kind of machinery here. There need to be no more speculation as to whether the lode lives down, by the assistance of the diamond drill a short time will sol ye the question. It has been shown in all parts of the civilised world where machinery was introduced that labor was increased in such a manifold way, which is the cause that science has taken the great stand it has during the present century, and so it will be the case of this district The quicker the various lines of reefs are further developed the greater tho number of miners will be required in working the lodes, and where there are 100 miners employed now, there will be in time, after the modern machinery is introduced, a much larger percentage required.
