LYELL MINING.
(Times.) CROESUS. Thursday, March 30. Since my last visit to this mine the contractors for driving No. 2 level have made considerable progress with the wort, and are now in a distance of 220 feet Last week a little quartz came into the face, and it is now quite evident that the men are driving on the track of the reef, there being well denned walls two feet apart, with a mixture of quarts, pug, and rubble between. The course of the tunnel is due north and south, and is going almost with the lay of the country, so that the track of reef is being taken in with the driving. The reef may therefore be expected to come in at any moment One hundred and ten feet of driving at No. 3 level has just been completed by the wages hands under Mr Fantella, and a contract has nowbeen let for constructing 40 feet of a rise and erection of paddock to connect with the shoot from No 1 level. This work is expected to be completed in about five weeks, A tiphead is being constructed at No. 2 level, to connect this portion of the mine with the shoot, so that when the paddock and rise are finished the No. 2 level contractors will be enabled to store any quartz they may take out In the event of bad weather inter, rupting the outside works now being carried on under Mr Fantella's supervision, he will continue No. 1 tunnel along the line of reef. An extraordinary meeting of shareholders was held on Saturday last, when it was decided to allot the company's reserved shares, subject to all calls made to date being paid upon them, amounting to 2s Id since the registration of the company. It has not yet been decided what steps shall be taken to procure crushing power.
