UNITED ALPINE.
Thursday, April 6. The monthly cleaning at this company's battery took place on Saturday last. During the month the stamps were running 29£ days, redubing 695 tons of stone. The collection of am^gam was —from the plfttes, 670 ozs; berdans, 48 oz; boxes, 116 ozs. This gave a return of 304 ozs. retorted gold. Tenders-are called for the construction of a shoot and paddock at No. 4 level. This work has been found necessary in order to take out the stone exposed on the surface near the filling-in-shaft, it being impossible to send the quartz down the passes owing to there being a large percentage of loose gold, which was carried away and lost by the heavy run of water always met with in this mine. When the paddock and shoot are completed, the manager will send stone to the mill from the surface block, and as very good prospects have been washed from this reef, there should be an improvement in the returns from the battery.
