\We are at M times happy to give expression to evert/ shade of opinion, but in no case do we Jtold -ourselves responsible for. the opinions of our correspondents.'] SORRY EXCUSES. ' ■ : ', — ♦ : [to the. editor inangahua tihes.] , Sir, — The excuses set forth by some people for not being either for or against forming Reeftori into a Borough, are contemptible in the extreme. Such excuses are selfish, unmanly, unprincipled, base, and cowardly. One publican says I wont sign fora Borough, as by so doing, lam signing for £15 extra license! fee. Another says I wont sign for ; or against, .as by doing either might injure my business. A third says let good enough alone, I am quite satisfied with things as they are. A fourth says I am friendly with the County Council, they have treated me well, and I wont do anything against them. Now, any person with a grain of common sense, who will analyse those excuses must come to the conclusion that a portion of our community is made up of a very undesirable class. The first excuse as to the imaginary extra fee for license is selfish and unprincipled, as tiiey consider the paltry extra fee of more consequence than the general welfare of the Borough ; the second is unmanly and cowardly. They are afraid of losing the sale of a half -pint of beer, a package of maizena,a yard of tape, a bunch of carrots, a pint of milk, a set of horse shoes, etc., etc., which are far weightier considerations with them then the general welfare, health, and prosperity of the. community. The third appears to be in their natural element, they are quite satisfied — the more dirt and filth, the more congenial.to them. The fourth are those ■ who are favorable to the Council — sort of pets, who gather up the crumbs of political favours. . I am, sir, one of the public, who will never crouch for any person's favours, and who values not any persons unjust displeasure. . Observer. Reef ton, April 18th, 1882.
