As will be seen by a report of the Exhibition Committee's proceedings, appearing in another column, that body promises to do great and gppd service to the district, and their energy will, without doubt, be productive of the best results. They have resolved to carry out the objects for which they were elected, with, or without, the assistance of the County Council, and have already empowered members to procure exhibits of various kinds — timber and marble being specially mentioned, though, of course, the quartz will be the leading feature. From the report of Mr Wise it seemed almost doubtful whether the County Council wi]srainto the matter* as heartily as the«bi^u^lrf th#Buhject, demands,, /but in%is" we cannot buff tfiink that he must Have been mistaken, and that the doubtful utterances of the Chairman were only caused by caution, and a desire not to commit himself to what he might be unable to carry out Owing to a variety of reasons, the Council could not gather together nearly as many exhibits as the members would have wished, and now that the ratepayers come forward at great loss of time and trouble, indeed money as well, it would be ungracious indeed not to find the small amount of expense that is asked for. We cannot suppose for a moment that such will be the case, feeling assured that every member must have the credit of the district at heart, and must wish it to be worthily represented at the Exhibition. At the same time the energy the members of committee are displaying is most creditable to them, and we hope that they will not stay their hands till exhibits, that are really representative of the Inangahua, are despatched. As previously stated, exhibits from other places as well as Reefton, are greatly behind-hand, and so this locality will not be singular in its products arriving a little after time. In the meantime we would urge on the Committee the old adage "better late than never," and trust that the County Council by all means in its power, will second the efforts now being made.
