(from our own correspondent.) London, May 16. In the Australians v. Oxford, the Home team continued their first ..innings, which closed for 189, against
362 of the Australians. Shaw contributed the highest score, 75. The University men followed on their second innings, and when the stumps were drawn had put together 119 for four wickets. The Australians met with a cordial reception when they went into the field. Their bowling and fielding during the day was excellent, and both elicited much applause. 17. The police to-day effected the arrest at Liverpool of ten men on board of an outward-bound steamer for Egypt It is believed that the capture has been made in connection with the assassination of Lord Cavendish and Mr Bourke. George Ctto Trevelyan, the newly appointed Irish Secretary, has been reelected for Hawick, without Opposition. The cricket match, Australians v. Oxford University, was won by the Australians, by nine wickets. May 17. In the House of Commons last night, the matter of the alleged understand--government and Parnell, in regard to thekttar'a release, Was under discussion. Several Conservative members re-affirmed the truth of the statement which had got current regarding the compact between Parnell and the Government, and denounced the covenant as utterly infamous and degrading. Gladstone, in reply, hotly denied the truth of the assertions, and challenged proof of the alleged compact St. Petebßburg, May 16. News is to hand of the death of General Kauffinann, Commander of the Russian army in Turkestan. Cairo, May 16. It has transpired that acting under the advice of foreign consuls, the Khedive has patched up the agreement with his Ministry. The crisis, which was imminent, has thus been averted. Stdkkt, May 17. The ship Cashmere, which swung on a sand bank in Newcastle harbor on Tuesday, has been successfully floated, and been berthed without having received any material injury. Bbubans, May 18. The steam tug, with the necessary material, has been despatched to the assistance of the steamer Kamsgate, which recently went ashore on King's , Beef, near Carawell
