MISCELLANEOUS.

The following statistical extract, which is taken from the British Medical Monthly, will show what the pipe does for the boys : — M A medical man, struck with a large number of boys under fifteen years of age he observed smoking, was led to enquire into the effect the habit had upon the general health. He took for his purpose 38 aged from 6to 15, and carefully ex* amined them. In 27 he discovered injurious traces of the habit In 22 there were various disorders of the circulation and digestion, palpitation of the heart, and more or less taste for strong drink. In twelve there was frequent bleeding of the nose, ten had disturbed sleep and twelve had slight ulceration of mucous membrance of the mouth, which disappeared on ceasing the use of tobacco fear some days. The doctor treated them all for weakness, and when the practice was discontinued health and strenth were soon restored." A pressman once had a wager with some ethers that he would insert a paragraph in the columns of an insignificant New Zealand paper that should go "all round the world." The bet was taken, and he inserted the following :— " It is well known that Mdle'de la Ratnoe, better known as • Ouida,* is about to come out to New Zealand shortly for the purpose of being united in holy bonds with a prominent Christchurch settler." He won the bet. Drink has been sold in large quantities to the Alexandra publicans, and there has been a great deal of drunkenness. The hotelkeepers sold drink, holding that Alexandra was not within the licensing district The question is a very narrow one, and on the inspection being made, the opinion was expressed that practically it is outside. A meeting of the Executive Council will be held to alter the boundary as soon as possible, so as to bring Alexandra within the native licensing district
