Wellington, May 30. In the Council this afternoon Whitmore moved an Address to the Queen congratulating her Majesty on her escape from assassination, the Address to be sent Home by cable. The Premier seconded the motion, and it was carried unanimously. In the House the Speaker took the chair at 2*30 p.m. About a score of petitions were presented, after which Green, member for Waikouati, took the oath and his seat. Before the Orders of the Day were proceeded with Sheehan took occasion to refer to the recent Knighthood of Hall, and Whitmore — one a former colleague of his own, the other an ex-colleague of the present Ministry. This, he thought, was an evidence of the impartial way in which Imperial favors were bestowed. He moved — " That this House tenders its hearty congratulations to the hon. member for Selwyn and hopes he may be long spared to enjoy the distinguished honors sn deservedly conferred upon him by his Sovereign, in recognition of long and honorable life in the public service of this Colony-" Macandrew, the " Fatherof the House," seconded the motion, which was supported by Montgomery and carried unanimously, amid an outburst of enthusiasm. The Colonial Treasurer said his side df the House thoroughly appreciated flic spirit in which the resolution hud been proposed, and the Speaker offered his congratulations to Hall, who thanked -the House in appropaiate terms. The Speaker, accompanied by Peacock hnd Rutherford, proceeded to Government House for purpose of presenting an Address in Reply, which the Governor made extremely formal and brief reply to.
