Weston has received a letter from Yogel who will communicate nothing definite about the railway till arrival in the Colony. Atkinson was too ill to deliver the Financial Statement to-day. The Christchuroh members and Mr Weston waited upon Hall to present a congratulatory address from the Christchurch Borough. He made a very neat reply. Matters in the House are very quiet now, no signs of serious opposition, but Grey is making friends amongst new members. The general feeling is that the Government will remain in office. It is now rumored that the Opposition will probably avoid attacking the Government on the question of finance, lest by so doing they should risk the passage of the new Loan Bill. The old local government question is alleged to be that to which their eyes are now turning with the idea of making it the chief battle-ground of the session. A meeting of the Blenheim, Picton, and Westland members was hel.l to-day, to consider the question of obtaining a vote out of the next new loan, to be exj pended on the construction of railways in their districts.
