♦ (prom our own correspondents.) Auckland, June 9. The nomination for Franklyn North took place to-day. The show of hands was Harris, 27 ; Buckland, 25. Buckland demanded a poll. June 10. The Board of Education yesterday decided that one book only, and one set of books only on each subject be used in the Board schools. Napier, June 10. Floods are now subsiding, but the beach is strewed with driftwood, dead sheep, cattle, and horses. One loss of life is reported, that of Martin Shanassay, who was drowned through being washed off his horse; while crossing a creel.. The bvigantine Isabella, from Oamaru, is high and dry, at Muriwhi. Her cargo has been saved. Christchurch, June 9. All the northern rivers are in a state of flood to-day, but no damage has yet been reported. The weather is dealing. Later. Eight American trotting horses im-
ported by Robert Wilkin, arrived from Auckland to-day, where they were transhipped from the mail steamer. David M'Leave, the man who fired at a rival in love, was committed for trial to-day. Bail was allowed — himself in j.IOO, and two sureties of £200 each. The evidence showed that the man was either drunk or made when he fired at Glanvile. Jealously being the immediate motive. New Plymouth, June 10. At the meeting of the Iron Company last night, the directors were elected. It is proposed to put the works in order, and get a competent manager as soon as possible, so as to carry on operations. Marton, June 9. The late flood in the Rangitiki river was the heaviest ever knowr in that river. The railway bridge near Halcombe was destroyed, and all traffic was suspended. One public bridge on the main line near Marton was also greatly damaged, and traffic suspended on this road also. Hokitika, June 9. Edward Shannan, a miner at Black Creek, near Woodstock, while working in a tunnel was covered up all but his head, by some timber giving way. Whilst his mate was endeavoring to extricate him some tons of earth fell on Shannan, and when he was got out, life was extinct. Deceased was 34 years old. He leaves a wife, but no family.
