THE WEEK.

[From our Mining Reporter.] Saturday, June 10. Mining matters still maintain a healthy tone, and the sharemarket has been fairly active during the week. A glance at the number of calls ma<lo this monthaffordsan index of the extraordinary activity now going on in the various mines. Indeed it may be said there is not a registered company in the field at the present time that is not pushing operations vigorously, and as the result of this we may look with confidence to the revelations of the next month or two. The extraordinary find in the Keep-it-Dark, which we chronicled towards the close of last week has awakened a new interest on that line, and besides adding largely to the value of the adjoining properties has brought to the front a number of new ventures which are now in strong competition for public favour. The Wealth of Nations Company affords a practical illustration of the fact that there is a tide in the affairs of companies, as well as of men, which if taken at the ebb, lead on to sore prosperity. That company, after languishing foryears, •£,. has within the last few weeks emerged "* from its long obscurity, and bids fair to £ rank with the best mines in the field. A magnificent body of stone has been met with, and since proved to be payable, and as the company hold one of the largest, if not the largest areas, in the field, it is impossible to over-rate the prosperity in store for the undertaking. A number of applications for new mining leases have been made during the week, and many of them are now commanding* high prices in the market. For all kinds of legitimate investment capital is abundant, and confidence seems on aU hands to be thoroughly established on a sound basis, in all of which facts may be discerned a brisk time in store for the district The following are the battery return* for the past week: — Welcome, 5060z. amalgam from 90> tons of stone. Keep-it-Dark, 3200z. sdwt. of amalgam, from 198 tons. Retorted gold for the fortnight 2860z» 4dwt
