TELEGRAMS.

(from our own correspondents.) — en Christchubch, June 19. A somewhat unusual point was decided in a probate case in Chambers to-day. The deceased's will provided that the residuary legatee should pay each of his sisters £suoo in live years by instalments, but he eonpounded by paying them each £3800 down, the advantage being that he could raise money at less interest than that allowed by the will as rebate. The point was whether the legacy duty bequest to daughters was to be calculator wo sums left them in the will, or amount paid down to them by their brother, the residuary legatee. His Honor decided that the duty should be assessed on the lesser amount. An influential meeting of the citizens, inciudingjthe Mayor, Bishop, Dean, and a large number of the clergy was held today, to consider what steps are most advisable to be taken to prevent the spread of larrikinism. After considerable discussion, the motion by the Dean was carried as follows : — " That it is desirable that an effort should be made to provide healthy occupation and amusement in the evening for the young men of Chrißtchurch and suburbs." Cowlishaw and Piiliet both addressed meetings tonight. The former had a very rowdy gathering, and no vote of any kind was passed. Pilliet had an orderly meeting, got a vote of thanks and confidence, and Andrews announced that he should withdraw in Pilliet's favor. A man named Johu Young was committed for trial yesterday, for a criminal assault on a woman. Ureymouth, June 19. A telegram has just been received stating that one of the hauling ropes of the cage for crossing the Teremakau, broke this morning, while two passengers were in it. They were, however, hauled over safely on the south bank.
