— ♦ (from oub own correspondents.) Christchurch, 21. The flood of applications for licenses in Sydenham, caused by the selection of the bench, which is supposed to be chosen in the licensed victuallers interest, received an unexpected check to-day, by adjournment of the meeting. Since the former meeting the Committee has gone round personally to inspect the buildings for which licenses were asked, and the result was that thirteen were refused and three granted. Dunedin, 21. Money has been staked for the wrestling match between Slade, of Timaru, and Professor Miller, of Mace and Miller's company. The amount is £50, the match will take place on Saturday night, in the Princess theatre. Napier, June 21. News has just been received from Mohaka that a Moari there has been so seriously injured by another that he cannot live. The case of Murtogh, jockey, charged with larceny as bailee, was heard today. It was shown that for the use of £100 for several months, and half the sum for two months longer, he had paid £215, or 175 per cent, interest The Crown Prosecutor refused to go on with the case after this was shown and Judge Gillies concurred in this course, sayiny the conduct of the prosecutor and his agent was most discreditable to them both. Nelson, June 21. A man named Hibbered, aged 73 years, residing at Wakapuaka, was found in bed this morning with his throat cut and he died this afternoon. He had been Buffeting from acute neuralgia. A nugget weighing 17 ozs. has been found at Hockey river, Collingwood, and there is no quartz visible in it. Good gold is reported as being got at Druggan's flat, Collingwood. Oamaru, June 22. The inquest was htld on the body of Neil McPhee, who died from injuries received in the Kartigi railway accident, yesterday morning and lasted till midnight, when the following verdict was returned by the jury — that the deceased died of pyaemia, from injuries received in an accident on the railway Hne at Final Creek bridge, which accident was occasioned by a horse getting on line and upsetting engine. A special telegram received here today states that the crew being unable to keep her afloat, brought to anchor in Flarbourne roadstead, and landed in ship's boats on Tuesday night. The vessel sank during the night* Later. Westport's crew have just arrived ; the rest are expected. Invercargill, June 22. A true bill has been found against T. Daniel, M.H.R, who is accused of having sent in a claim to vote without being authorised. The charge will probably be heard on Friday. Hokitika, Jne 21. The floods have done considerable damage in the Arahura district. Auckland, June 21. A man named Frome, who fell from his horse while returning home to Mangere, from Otahuhu polling booth during North Franklin election, died in hospital to-day. The prospectus has been issued of the Union Oil, Soap, and Stearine Candle Company, capital £50,000 in £1 shares. Oamartt, June 21. Mr Derrett, purser of the steamer Grafton, was standing talking near the wharf when three trucks ran off the line used by the contractors for mole — one truck struck the unfortunate young man, and precipitated him over an embankment on rocks below*, a distance of about 20 feet. His skull v badly fractured, with his brain protruding. He was at once taken to the hospital, but is not expected to recover.
