« At the spring meeting of the Lon " , don Athletic Club W. P. Phillips has lieaten all previous amateur records by running the 120 yds in 11 4-5-sec. At the same meeting W. G. George added another to his long list of brilliant achievements by covering 7 miles in 3 5 rain 55 l-ssec. A writer in an English sporting newspaper remarks; — " Mr G.W. George in this race certainly proved himself by far and away the best long distance amateur wo have ever had. I remember well how a, few years age, when Slade and Gibb met in their - sensational fourmile match, and ran locked all the way, and then only did 20min 25£ sec, for the distance and beat all previous records, what a big performance it was regarded as ; while George did his 4 miles in 20min 20] sec, and finished the full distance in the marvellous time of 35inin 55 l-ssec, smothering the pre\ ious best on record, accomplished by G. M. Nehan, viz., 37min 33 2-ssec, on April 2, 1881." A Yorkshire estate of 22,658 acres has just been sold for £500,000 exclusive of timber, which is yet to be valued. The annual rental of its farms amounts to £12,000, and there is sporting over 96,000 acres of moot's. Tfie proberty has been held intact ever since the Conquest. The first recorded owner was Eral Edwin, a brother-in-law of King Harold and a grandson o£ the famous Countess Godivo.
