THE STICK AS A TURKISH WEAPON.

It is amusing, writes a correspondent* < to observe that some of the newg-;i t papers, particularly those that are al- ,^ ways happiest when proving an Englishman to be in the wrong and somebody else in the right, have laid grent emphasis on the fact that the rioterß in Alexandria were only armed with sticks. I venture to say that if theso good people had ever seen a Turk or an ! Arab waging battle with the aid of a j stick, they would have a much higher respect for that weapon than they appear to entertain for it at present. It has been my fortune on more tliatone occasion to see how your Turk can use his fi^uk, which is no mere cant) such as ytour crutch-and tooth-pick young gentleman of • to-day carries, hut ' m " cuclgej as stout and strong as that onca wielded t>y Friar Tuck. I have seen j men killed outright by a single blow 1 from |this tremendous weapon, when that* blow has been struck by the mjbreiless hands of a Mussulman anxious to kill; a Christian. I have seen a i whole Vow of unhappy Greeks on their knees imploring mercy from a band of Turkish ruffiians, and having their prayers answered by such a shower of blows upon their heads and shoulders as it made one sick to see and to listen to. I wonder if the people who are now trying to minimise the character of the outrage at Alexandria because Bticks were used would write as calmly if they had seen a spectacle of that kind. , I trow not
