Owing to the failure of the substitute for coal gas, which Mr Williams intended to use in the production of the lime light, the public have beeu cheated of the pleasure of witnessing the Mirror of Ireland. The experiments made yesterday with the light, although partly successful, did not come up to expectations, and Mr Williams therefore decided, rather than show at a disadvantage, to postpone the exhibition until he procures apparatus in which to bring gas from Greymonth. The public, from all we read, have missed a genuine treat, but Mr Williams has arranged to return at an early date, when we have no donbt he will be amply rewarded for his enterprise. Inspector Emerson arrived by coach last night, for the purpose of conducting the inquiry into the recent tire in lower Shiel-street. Whether owing to a blunder of the Department) or to a remarkable eccentricity of the orbits in which its emissaries move, the appearance here of three agents of the Government Insurance Department in conjunction is, we imagine, something of a mistake. For several days past the public have been fairly bewildered with insurance literature, and the conflicting importunities of the industrious agents are found to act rather as an impediment than an aid to real business. The Government having appointed a travelling agent for the West Coast, for the ordinary branch, we do not think it ia altogether to the interest of either the Department, the agent, and certainly not to the peace of mind of the inhabitants, that this life and death — especially life, competition should be allowed. Too many cooks have spoilt the broth before to-day. Though we deemed our authority unquestionable, we find that we were misinformed with reference to the sale of M'Gaffin 's Hotel, Lyell, to Mr Fama. We are requested by Mr Fama to state that he has purchased the hotel belonging to Mr John Fennel, Lyell, and has made arrangements for extensive additions to the premises. A contemporary states that Professor , Denton was 0:1 a recent Sunday evening hissed off the platform at Auckland, for declaring the Bible was a tissue of falsehoods. > The Auckland Fibre Company will give employment to eighty nr one hundred persons. New Zealaud flax will bo largely used. A mysterious outbreak of disease at Marton, we learn from the i-angitikei Advocate, has carried off still another of v* r Marr 's children, a girl aged about two and a-half years, making three in all. Dr. S ker man has now no doubt that the malady is a form of English cholera, and that it has resulted from the impure water used by the family. The well has been cut off from the service pipe for about five months, and no freshwater has entered it during that long period. Meanwhile the drainage from the yard has been soaking into it. Dr Skerman submitted a sample of the water to microscopic examination, and found that it 'l swarmed with morbific germs. The well has been opened, and found to be in a filthy condition. The two remaining children of Mr Marr, who had shown signs of sickening, and also Mrs Marr, were by latest • accounts improving, and there seems to be no danger of further fatalities. The Bey. C. P. Byng, who presided at a late meeting of cricketers in Dunedin, in the course of his remarks said : — " He would say this : he believed every man ought to know how to box, wrestle, and fence. He was a little bit of a boxer himself; but some people said, 'Don't teach a man boxing, because the first thing he will do will be to attempt to give you a black eye ; nor fencing, because he will try to poke his umbrella through your eye.' He hold poople might as well say, * Don't teach a man to read, because he might read indecent books ; nor writing, as he might commit forgery.' That was only the abuse of'the power. They were not responsible for a man who learned boxing and boxed unfairly and any more than they were for a man who could write committing a forgery.' The physical development of man should be more thought of than it was, and he repeated, a. a clergyman, that the three requisites of a good physical education were boxing, fencing, aud wrestling.'
