LYELL MINING.

(Times ) Friday, August 18. Mining matters continue very dull, and there is very little of importance to chronicle from any part of the field. From New Creek, however, reports of an encouraging character, are daily coming to hand, from the United Victory Company's mine, each succeeding "set" that is opened upon the reef giving increased assurance of its permanence and richness. Good progress is being made with the race, and the piping to connect it with the turbine is now being delivered. Crushing should be startod in about four or five weeks. — What is believed to be the United Victory line of reef has been found about half-a-inile north of the No. 2 North Victory lease, and one or two leases havn been pegged off. A little gold has been obtained iv the stone, and during the coining summer months it wiil receive a fair trial. — From the United Italy Company's mine, Eight-mile, some j

good specimens were brought in and * lodged at the Company's office on Satur day last. The stone came from the main : body of the reef, and the gold is of a ' heavy coarse naturo, being freely distributed over the quartz. The hands are employed as reported last week, viz, extending level, and stoping overhead. — There is nothing new to report from the United Alpine Company's mine. The usual number of hands are employed stoping in the different faces, and the extension of No. 5 level continue to be pushed ahead.— The No. 2 Alpine Company have just had a survey taken of the reefs exposed in their ground by Mr E. W. BuUer with a view to arriving at a definite idea of their positions and bearings. I shail give a summary of his recommendations next week. — The mon employed by tho South British Company this week obtained a little goid in the large reef which they have lately been cross-cutting. Although the find is not a rich one, still it will be the means of causing the directors to extensively prospect this lode, and may lead up to highly payable results.— The Lyell Creek Extended contractors are making fair headway with their work, the distance attained up to the present being abq^-250 feet. *). am infornted that it is __^wM-ioal*nf-the directors of the Company to order a rock-boring machine, which they purpose having in readiness to start in the tunnel as soon as the present contract is completed. The machines are now being largely used in the leading mines of the Keefton district, and are found to be a groat saving both in labour, and expense and the Lyell Creek Extended Company deserve success to reward their enterprise in being the first to introduce the rock borers into this district. — From Victor Emanuel district good reports are to hand regarding the progress of that Company's operations. On Monday last the reef in the stope, which was up about 23 feet, was nearly three feet in thickness, and in the faco of the tunnel there was a similar width of quartz, this having prevailed without variation for a distance over 20 feet. This is certainly gratifying, as hitherto the reef has been a succession of "blows" being for a "set "or two of largo size, then again pinching nearly out. Now, however, much better country is being gone through, and tbe stone gives promise of maintaining its present regularity. — Tnree of the directors of the Cosmopolitan Company visited the ground this week and having taken bearings of the roef, and the old tunnel driven some years ago, find that it requires to be extended some distance in a north-westerly direction to intersect the lode. A conI tract is to be at once let with this inteni tion. I
