THE Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. FRIDAY, AUGUST 25, 1882.
The tenders called for for the postal services for the years 1883 and 1884 roust be puzzling to a good many who will tender, owing to the multiplicity of the alterations that they propose. These are specially numerous in connection with Reef ton, and the question conies, why, when so many speculative offers were asked, for tenders could not be invited for a daily service between . either Reeftpn and Greymouth or Reef ton and Westport. The expense might very probably have been found too heavy to venture, but, at the same time, that faot might have been so ascertained without the least doubt. There is no question that the Inangahua is one of the most rising, if not the most rising districts in the Colony, and with the approaching spring and summer a great influx of population, and a large increase in mining development will assuredly take plnee. Already the telegraph office here is overburdened with work, and the amount of correspondence by letter is greater probably ! than in any other' locality containing anything near the game population. The way in which the up eouclws have been loaded of late shows how keen an interest i s 11OW j^lt in Reefton, and people umw not to spy out the nakedl.ess of the land, to Satisfy themselves that the tiecouiits that are soberly given are not overstated, or too glowji'g for the reality, Almost every ,
week thwe arc now arrivals, and these are likely to increase as the season progresses. A great many are business men, seeking settlement, and in a numIter of instances resolving on casting their lot in with the fortunes of the luangahua. The number of mining enterprises recently initiated, presuming even that only half of them are prosecuted, will necessitate the employment of a large number of miners, and it is quite clear from all surrounding circumstances that before the end of next summer we may anticipate that the population will not be far short of double its present number. With the increased activity in mining matters, and business generally, correspondent of all kinds will be largely swelled, and it is not to much to say that very possibly in a few months that of Reefton will assume such dimensions as to justify a daily mail. the increased cost might be so little as to permit it at once, though that is not probable. In any case there would have been no harm in asking for one more tender, and even now it is not two late to do so. If our member were asked to make the suggestion to the Government, possibly the experiment might be made. If the present advance of the district does not suddenly freeze, or in mining j phrase " pinch out," the request for such a boon would be by no means an '■ unreasonable one, and in any case, an application for a daily mail would certainly meet with due consideration. ; There is not much time, it is true, for I action to be taken, as the tenders close on the 9th proximo, but if the members above referred to were communicated with, possibly something might be done as the services do not commence till the Ist of January, 1883.
