IN ANG AHU A COUNTY COUNCIL
♦ The ordinary meeting of the County Council, was held at the Council Chambers, Smith-street, on Wednesday evening last, at 7 o'clock. Present : The Chairman, and Messrs Williams, Feehan, Hyrn«, Kibet, and Patterson. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and continued. The correspondence received was then read, and dealt with as follows : — From James Miller, asking the Council to make a road to Main-street. Proposed by Mr Patterson, that the street referred to in Mr Miller's letter be formed 10 feet wide, and gravelled 12 feet wide, and that tenders be called for same, to close .•it the next meeting of the Council. Seconded by Mr Feehan,
Discussion ensued, whereupon Mr Byrne moved as an amendment, that the subject matter referred to in Miller's letter be referred to the Engineer to report on at the next meeting of the Council. Seconded by Mr Williams. The Chairman put the amendment first, and declared it oarried, and the original resolution lost. From Mr Gardner, re water scheme. J-rom D. L. Cochrane and W. Cuchraue, asking the Council to make a dray road to their saw-mills. Proposed by Mr Byrne, that Mr Cochrane be written to, informing him that the Council were not in a position to comply with his request at present. Seconded by Mr Irving, and carried. From Mr Hobby, asking the Council to extend the time for receiving schemes re water supply. Proposed by Mr Byrne, that the time for receiving schemes for water supply be extended for one month from date. Seconded by Mr Williams. Some discussion ensued, when Mr Patterson moved as an amendment, that no extension of time be granted. Seconded by MrFeohan. The Chairman put the amendment first, and declared it lost, and the original resolution carried. From D. Emanuel, asking the Council to giVe an extension of time to complete his contract. Proposed by Mr Byrne, that the extension of time be granted. Seconded by Mr Williams, and carried. From Hans Jacobson and others, drawing the attention of the Council to the state of the creek running under their residences. Proposed by Mr Patterson* that the Engineer be instructed to prepare plans and specifications, and an estimate of the cost of constructing a main drain commencing at the protective works and terminating at Sinnamon-street, with a view of caliing tenders for same at an early date. Seconded by Mr Williams, and canned. From the residents of Upper Broadway, re certain road, and requesting the Council to remedy the same. Proposed by Mr Williams, that the Engineer be instructed to repair the road alluded to. Seconded by Mr Irving, and carried. A petition from residents at Black's Point was received, asking the Council to complete the formation of Ramsaystreet. Referred to the Engineer to report on. .in application was made by John Blakely, for water-tables to be constructed in Sinnamon - street. The request was agreed to, the Engineer to be instructed to have the work done. Halph de Young applied for permission to buiid a stable on the reserve near Mi's Lawson's. lief erred to the Engineer to report on. Michael Keefe requested the Council to clear timber off Antonio's Creek, lieferred to the hngineer. A remittance of £835 was received from the Colonial Treasurer, being accrued goldfields revenue. From Mr liibet, drawing . attention to the state of the road in the Upper Buller. deceived. . \_' ■ A letter was received from the Undersecretary for the Goldfields, statimg that the application for subsidy in aid of a prospecting track from Capleston to Larry's Creek would be entertained when the Estimates were passed. Mr Weston, M.H. R., wrote to the Council, asking certain particulars in reference to main roads and bridges in the County, and the Clerk was directed to supply the information. The manager of the Energetic Com pany wrote, stating that the company declined to give up their rights their tramway, though the County Council offered to make a dray road instead. n offer from Hill Hamilton to allow the Council to make a road through his property for the sum of £100 was declined, on the ground that the road used would not be of any permanent benefit to the County. The Engineer's reports were read, but merely referred to works going on. A recommendation was, however, made in one to the effect that the sum of £70 should be paid to Mr Irving for the right to the road and pack-track constructed by him at Lankey's Creek. On the motion of Mr Byrne, seconded by Mr Williams, this was agreed to. Tenders were ordered to be called for the construction of a road at Rainy Creek, to be in by the next meeting. Tenders were also ordered to be called for the formation of a dray road 12 feet wide, commencing at Ikimatua road and terminating at Johnston's store. . The Clerk was instructed to write to ■ Mr Lee asking his permission to make a road, 33 feet wide, through his property, without compensation. . The very large areas now being applied for as special claims came up for discussion, the result of which was 1 that a resolution proposed by AJ r Byrne, 1 and seconded by Mr Williams, was carried " That the Chairman write to the Minister of Mines calling his attention to the large areas now applied for in , this district as special claims." The following resolution proposed by Mr Byrne was carried " That the estimate of the proposed expenditure of the Council during the period the rate is to be made, showing the means already available for such purpose, the additional sum required, the total rateable value of rateable property on the valuation roll, and the rate thereon necessary to raise the money required, be approved of by the Council and be publicly notified in the County at least 1 4 days before the next ordinary meeting of the Council." The month's accounts were passed, together with other items, amonnting to £876 Is. lid., after which the Council adjourned at midnight.
